Studies have shown that there are more people who are obese than it was 20 years ago. Society can blame the number of fast food chains and the kinds of ingredients used in making these meals but no one forced the customer to eat. It was the decision of the individual to drive over and order something on the menu.

There are a lot of diet plans out there to help people who are obese or overweight. A good example is the low fat high fiber diet. This may be a bit different than some of the more familiar ones but it has proven to shed off those excess pounds in some individuals.

The reason why this is effective is because fiber has important benefits such as improving blood sugar levels and reducing cholesterol, which will lower the chances of anyone to have heart disease.

There are two types of fibers normally found in plants. The first is soluble fiber, which is dissolves in water. This can be found in bananas, broccoli, citrus fruits and oatmeal.

The second is insoluble fiber, which does not dissolve in water. The person can get this by eating corn or wheat bran and brown rice.

There are some things to remember for anyone who wants to undergo a low fat high fiber diet.

First timers should gradually increase the amount of fiber in the diet to prevent having any digestive problems.

Second, it is advisable to drink lots of water to prevent dehydration caused by loose bowel movement otherwise known as diarrhea.

Third, the individual should try different types of dishes that are rich in fiber. There are cookbooks and recipes in magazines or the Internet, which can be prepared at home and shared to the whole family.

Breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day. Instead of having bacon and eggs, this should be substituted with some low fat milk and some cereal. The serving should only be half a cup with no second rounds after.

The first meal was probably not that filling. This is the reason that the person can have a mid morning snack such as a fruit. Those who want to carry this around can have some raw nuts instead.

As the middle of the day approaches, it is time to have some lunch. This can be a mix of low fat cheese and 4 ounces of meat. This should be a lean cut of beef, chicken or a turkey breast.

Snack in the afternoon can be some fat free salad dressings that must be limited to 2 servings.

When it is time to go home, dinner must be prepared and served. This should have a lot of non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli or cabbage. Some herbs, spices or lemon juice can be added for flavoring.

People who follow the low fat high fiber diet will usually lose 1 to 2 pounds per week. Some use this until the desired weight has been reached while others have decided to stick with it.

This program is designed to help lose fat. For safety reasons, it is best to this gradually so that the muscles are not lost.
